I recently headed to the Florida Keys so that I could cross off the three dives sites from my list of the top 100 dive sites in the world: The Vandenberg Wreck, the Spiegle Grove Wreck and Molasses Reef.
The Vandenberg and Spiegle Grove are part of the Wreck Trek of the Keys, which include a handful of other sweet wrecks around the Keys.
I dove with Dive Key West Inc, which was great because they had an awesome guide, as well as a sweet boat for the hour long trip to the wreck. The dive gods were not with us much that day, as the visibility and current were not awesome.
They said it doesn’t get much worse, visibility wise, and it still wasn’t too bad. So even though my photos tuned out dark and scary, the dives were actually awesome, and I could see fine. Even on its worse day, Vanderberg delivered.
Plus, a bad day of diving, beats a good day in the office any day…. And this wasn’t a bad day.
Even though the photos didn’t turn out great, it was an awesome two dives on the Vandy. I also got to cross off another item on my mission to dive the best dives in the world, so that was awesome!
The most memorable aspects of the wreck are undoubtedly the huge flag, the big satellite, and a giant grouper who lives on the wreck. All three offer some great photo opportunities you won’t want to miss.
The Florida Keys has a lot of great diving, and the Vanderberg is top of the heap! If you are diving out of Key West, I would highly recommend Dive Key West, as my time with them was great!
