Tucked away in the middle of a lush jungle is Cenote Lol Ha. This hidden gem is located right in the heart of a thick rainforest in a town called Yaxunah in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It is a quiet cenote that is not as thick with tourists as other cenotes in the state, which is perfect for those seeking an idyllic escape.
CENOTE LOL HA
Cenote Lol Ha might not be flocked as other cenotes but that does not take away anything from this cenote. In fact, most of those that have visited it claim that it is one of the most beautiful cenotes that they have ever seen. That is saying a lot given there are over 200 cenotes in Mexico.
Most of those who visit Cenote Lol Ha do so through accidental discovery. This cenote can be passed through when you are driving to Merida. The cenote can be hard to find because it is surrounded by ancient endemic trees. It is located approximately 15 miles from Chichen Itza, which is one of the top attractions for tourists in Merida.
Cenote Lol Ha is an open type cenote, which means that there is a large opening in the middle of this underground sinkhole. Several branches and roots hang from the trees that surround the cenote, which creates a mystical detail to the cenote.
To access the deep blue waters of this cenote, you need to make your way down a set of stairs. When you reach the bottom, you can jump right into the crystalline waters for a relaxing swim. In fact, the water is so clear that you can see what is beneath the surface. Depending on which part of the cenote you explore, the depth can vary significantly.
The name of the cenote is derived from a Mayan word, which means “bud of water”. This Mayan reference also speaks to the significance of this cenote to the ancient Mayan people who once inhabited the area.
This cenote is important not just for tourists seeking a quiet and cool escape from the heat, or with the ancient Mayan people. It also serves as home to a variety of animal species such as various bird species (owls and swallows), armadillos, iguanas, squirrels, and raccoons, among other things.
