Los Islotes (The Colony)

The Los Islotes dive site in La Paz is located half a mile to the north of Isla Espiritu Santo. It consists of two rock islets that have formed a natural arch. This is one of the most popular dive sites in La Paz because this rock formation is teeming with underwater marine life. Among those species you will get the chance to encounter are blue and gold King angel fish, silver sardines, and yellow surgeon fish. These fish species live in golden cup corals, which are a huge attraction on the dive site.

If these fish species are not enough, there is also a colony of California brown sea lions. The great thing about these sea lions is that they love interacting with visitors.

El Bajo (Marisla Sea Mount)

This is a sea mount that is located 8.2 miles from Los Islotes. It is made up of three underwater peaks that are distributed along a three hundred yard line. The central peak features a flat top and shallow depth. The central peak serves as the primary dive site out of the three peaks. This spot is famous for the hammerhead sharks.

Rocas Lobos (Sea Lion Rocks)

Another popular dive site in La Paz is Rocas Lobos, also known as Sea Lion Rocks. This dive site consists of coral heads, overhangs, and small caves. It is also a popular dive site for night diving. Marvel at the sight of huge sleeping parrot fish that hide in their cocoon to protect themselves from predators. The area got its name because it was once a home for a colony of sea lions.

Isla Ballena (Whale Island)

This dive site is a small island located on the western coast of Isla Espiritu Santo. This is one of the most sought after dive sites in La Paz because of the dive-through caves. These caves have pockets of air that enable divers to come up to the surface inside the rock. When you explore these caves, you will also find garden of conger eels. Other notable sightings in this dive site are dolphins and schools of rays.

Gaviota Wrecks

This shipwreck diving site is located just offshore of Isla Gaviota. During this dive, you can go as deep as 45 to 60 feet. You will be able to explore two sunken boats that offer penetration wherein you can find more sea life such as lobsters, anemones, and sergeant majors.

Other notable dive sites in La Paz are the Salvatierra Wreck, La Reina, La Reinita, and Fang Ming & Lapas.

BEST TIME TO DIVE

For the best diving experience in La Paz, you need to visit from fall to spring. The months of July to December offer the best visibility that can go down to 25 meters (around 80 feet). Several diving experts pick the months of September to November as the prime diving season, especially for spotting whale sharks. If you dive from December to March, you can also encounter grey and humpback whales.

HOW TO GET TO LA PAZ

By Air:

You must fly into the nearest airport to La Paz – Los Cabos International Airport. Other domestic airports that you can fly to if you are coming from other parts of Mexico are Manuel Marquez de Leon International Airport and Federal del Valle del Fuerte International Airport.

By Land:

From the airport, you can take the public bus or taxi to get to La Paz. You can also rent a car as there are many services to choose from.
