The USAT is an American ship wreck, that is now one of the best wreck dives in Bali, and maybe even in the world. If you are coming to Bali to dive, this is one you wont want to miss!
The ship was hit by a Japanese torpedo and beached near Tulamben during the war, and in 1963, the eruption of Mount Agung caused the vessel to slip off the beach, and is now lying on a sandy slope with the top around 9 meters, and the bottom near 38.
The wreck is about 130 m long, and covered in growth and marine life. Try to get there in the early morning before it gets too crowded. This is the most popular dive in Bali, so it will get crowded.
The bottom is littered with tons of basketball size boulders, with anemones and small creatures hiding in them. You will probably run into a seahorse or nudibranch along the way as well. And thats not even the wreck part!
Check out this video from my friend Mike Corey, to see what it’s really like.
The wreck is home to morays, jacks, batfish, a big potato grouper, turtles, macro critters and much more. It’s also a great site for night diving, so you might want to try that out.
To get to Tulamben, the easiest way is to just get a taxi or a Uber, and tell them where you are going. That’s the easiest and probably cheapest option, unless of course your dive center will arrange for pickup.
Your second option is to drive. To get there you need to head to the north east coast, and it shouldn’t be too difficult to find with a map or GPS. You can ask around for your resort once in town if you need.
The diving is good year round in Tulamben, but check HERE for the best times to visit Bali, to the Amed area, and many of those can arrange transfer from your hotel in Kuta or other parts of Bali.
You might also consider taking a PADI dive course while in Bali, or even in Tulamben. How fun would it be to take the Wreck Diving Speciality on the Liberty! Of course there are many other courses you can take, and this would also be a great spot to do a divemaster internship.
Although for some the highlight is the Liberty Wreck, Tulamben also offers a lot of other great dive sites, and amazing marine life. It has locations with some of the best muck diving in the world, and has also been known for the big guys, like whale sharks and dolphins.
Bali is an amazing place that attracts lots of divers, but there are plenty of other attractions as well. Here are a few resources to get you started, so you can plan one amazing trip!
