DIVING PLAYA DEL CARMEN
Playa Del Carmen is another very popular Yukatan destination, and it’s highlights must certainly be the beaches and diving. You can both explore lots of cenotes nearby, as well as some dives off-shore.
PLAYA DEL CARMEN DIVING
Playa Del Carmen is another very popular Yukatan destination, a little quieter than nearby Cancun, and it’s highlights must certainly be the beaches and diving. But it’s not only cenotes, with off-shore dives and on-land attractions to explore.
There will be a bunch of dive locations on this list, that are very well known for their large number of cenotes, and although Playa Del Carmen also has it’s fair share, there is also more to offer in the area.
One of our favorite dives, is the seasonal bullshark dive, where your dive shop will take you just off-shore, and let you watch as they hand feed some giant sharks. It is truly a one of a kind experience not to miss!
BEST DIVE SITES
Playa Del Carmen is more centrally located than Tulum, if you want to be based here and take some of the many day trips nearby. So not only are there a few great dives around Playa itself, but you can also easily get to off-shore sites around Cozumel, Tulum and Cancun, as well as countless cenotes around Merida, Valladolid and beyond.
There are of course tons of cenotes closest to Playa, and you do not want to give these a miss. Here are a few of our favorites:
There are many more cenotes in the area, so read our guide to the 72 Best Cenotes in Mexico for more information.
BEST TIME TO DIVE
Playa Del Carmen is a year-round destination. For uncrowded sites and great visibility, book your holiday between May and November.
There is no bad time to dive the Caribbean. In fact, the water temperatures remain constant year-round and cool only slightly during the winter months, meaning it’s possible to dive approximately 300 days each year.
From November to March is the season where you can dive with the big female bullsharks, just offshore with experienced guides. A few dive shops in the area specialize in these tours, and they are an amazing dive.
HOW TO GET TO PLAYA DEL CARMEN
The closest airport to Playa Del Carmen is the Cancun airport, which is about an hour drive. Playa Del Carmen is also accessible by public bus.
There is a bus run by ADO that travels between the airport and the central bus station in Playa Del Carmen every hour (sometimes more often during busy season).
Tickets can be purchased on the bus or at the ADO booth. Tickets will be cheaper if you pay by soles over US dollars.
HIGHLIGHTS OF PLAYA DEL CARMEN
The main attraction in Playa del Carmen is the scuba diving and cenotes, but it’s a fun place to explore as well. Relaxing beach clubs, shops, and spas line the streets of this town.
It’s also quite popular for golf enthusiasts and those interested in eco tourism. During the summer tourists can participate in night walks to keep an eye out for turtles laying eggs on the beach.
Playa is also the gateway to the much smaller Cozumel and also Tulum, so once you get your partying and shopping done, you can head over to one of them for a quieter time.
